Casablanca Mohammed V Airport (CMN) handles more passengers than any other airport in Morocco. It also sits 30 km south-east of the city centre — far enough that getting your timing wrong means missing your flight.
This is the guide your hotel concierge should have given you.
— The Basic Rule —
For most domestic and short-haul international flights, leave at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure time, plus your drive time. For long-haul flights or peak travel periods, add another 30 to 45 minutes on top.
The airport recommends arriving 2 hours before departure for international flights and 1.5 hours for domestic. But that does not account for the drive, and the drive is where most people go wrong.
— How Long Is the Drive? —
From central Casablanca (Maarif, Gauthier, Corniche area), the airport is typically:
- Early morning (5am–7am): 25 to 35 minutes
- Morning rush (7am–9am): 45 to 75 minutes
- Daytime off-peak (10am–4pm): 30 to 45 minutes
- Evening rush (5pm–8pm): 60 to 90 minutes
- Night (9pm–4am): 25 to 35 minutes
The N9 highway is the main route and usually flows well, but roadworks, an accident or a busy Friday afternoon can double your journey time without warning.
— The Mohammed V Highway Toll —
The route from Casablanca to the airport uses a toll motorway. Your private transfer driver will include the toll in your quoted price — there are no surprises. If you are taking a petit taxi, note that some drivers add the toll on top at the end, which can catch people out.
— From Marrakech to the Airport —
Many travellers fly out of Casablanca Mohammed V even when staying in Marrakech, because of wider international connections. The Marrakech to CMN drive is approximately 240 km and takes 2.5 to 3 hours under normal conditions.
If your flight departs at 8am, you need to leave Marrakech no later than 4:30am — ideally 4am to be comfortable. Yes, that means a very early alarm, but missing an international flight costs far more.
For Marrakech departures via CMN, we always recommend leaving 3.5 to 4 hours before your scheduled flight time.
— What Can Go Slow You Down? —
Beyond traffic, the check-in queues at CMN can be long during Ramadan travel periods, Eid al-Adha, summer school holidays (July–August), and around Christmas. Security queues have also grown since new scanning procedures were introduced. Add an extra 30 minutes if you are travelling during any of these periods.
— The Train Option (And Its Limits) —
Casablanca has a direct train link to the airport — the ONCF Al Boraq and regional trains stop at "Aéroport Mohammed V" station. A train from Casa-Voyageurs takes around 35 minutes and costs about 45 MAD.
The train is a solid option if you are travelling light, know the station, and your hotel is near a station. It becomes impractical with large suitcases, young children, or if you are leaving from a hotel far from the city centre.

For peace of mind, book your airport transfer the day before. Share your flight number. Your driver will suggest the optimal departure time based on your specific route and flight, and will track traffic conditions on the morning of travel.
