Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG) serves Morocco's northern gateway city — a place where Europe and Africa face each other across just 14 km of water. Tangier is unique among Moroccan travel hubs: many visitors arrive by plane but leave by ferry, or arrive by ferry and depart by plane. Others use Tangier as the starting point for an overland journey south.

Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport is a modern, mid-sized terminal opened in 2011. It handles mainly European charter and low-cost traffic, with a growing number of domestic connections. The arrivals hall is compact and straightforward.
Pre-booked transfer drivers wait just outside the arrivals exit with name signs. Official taxis operate from a stand 50 metres to the right as you exit.

Journey time: 20 to 30 minutes

The airport is south-east of the city. The route into Tangier passes through newer suburban districts before reaching the Ville Nouvelle (modern city) and the medina quarter.
If you are staying in the medina, note that the kasbah area has restricted vehicle access. Your driver will drop you at the nearest entrance.
— Transfer to Tanger-Med Ferry Port —
This is the route that makes Tangier Airport unique. Tanger-Med — the largest port in Africa — is located 45 km east of Tangier city, near the town of Fnideq.
Distance from airport: approximately 50 km via the A4 motorway
Journey time: 40 to 55 minutes
Many travellers fly into Tangier and connect directly to a ferry to Algeciras or Tarifa in Spain. Conversely, those arriving by ferry from Spain often transfer to Tangier Airport for onward flights into Morocco or further abroad.
This Tangier Airport to Tanger-Med Port transfer is a specialist route that most street taxis do not readily serve. Pre-booking is strongly recommended — agree the price (typically 300–400 MAD) and confirm the driver knows the ferry terminal, not just Tangier port (the old port in the city centre, which no longer handles car ferries to Spain).
— Transfer to Tangier Ville Station (Train) —
For travellers connecting to the high-speed Al Boraq train to Casablanca or Rabat, the relevant station is Tangier Ville. The airport is approximately 20 km from Tangier Ville station — a 25 to 35 minute transfer.
Al Boraq (Morocco's TGV) connects Tangier to Casablanca in under 2 hours and Casablanca to Rabat in an additional 45 minutes. If you are connecting to Casablanca by train, this is the fastest overland route in Morocco.
— Transfer to Tetouan or Chefchaouen —
Tetouan, the gateway to the Rif Mountains and the blue city of Chefchaouen, is 60 km east of Tangier.
Tetouan: approximately 60 km, 50 to 70 minutes, from 350 MAD
Chefchaouen: approximately 120 km, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, from 550 MAD
These routes are not served by convenient public transport from the airport. A private transfer is effectively the only practical direct option.

For those who prefer the overland journey south:
Tangier to Rabat: 340 km, approximately 3 hours via A1 motorway
Tangier to Casablanca: 350 km, approximately 3 hours 20 minutes
The A1 is a modern, well-maintained motorway through coastal and central Morocco. This route passes near Larache, Kenitra and the Mamora Forest.

For European travellers doing a Morocco circuit — landing in Tangier, travelling south to Fès, Marrakech and Agadir, then flying home from Agadir — Tangier Airport is the ideal entry point. Your first transfer from the airport sets the tone for the whole trip. Starting it with a pre-booked, fixed-price vehicle heading towards the medina is, in our experience, the best possible beginning.
