Essaouira is one of Morocco's most beloved destinations — a whitewashed Atlantic port city known for its wind, its seafood, its music and its laid-back atmosphere. It sits 180 km west of Marrakech, on the coast.
The challenge: there is no train. There is no direct airport bus. Getting from Marrakech Airport to Essaouira requires a bit of planning. Here are all your realistic options.
— Option 1: Pre-Booked Private Transfer (Recommended) —
A direct private transfer from Marrakech Airport (RAK) to Essaouira takes 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on traffic and the route taken.
The standard route follows the P2020 road west through the foothills of the Atlas Mountains and across the Chiadma plain. It is a beautiful drive — largely empty roads, argan forest, Berber villages and the gradual smell of the Atlantic as you near the coast.
Price: Approximately 500–700 MAD for a full sedan vehicle (up to 3 passengers with standard luggage). For a van (up to 7 passengers), expect 700–950 MAD.
This is the cleanest, most comfortable, and most direct option. Your driver meets you at Marrakech Airport arrivals, takes you directly to your riad in Essaouira, and you arrive relaxed.
— Option 2: CTM Bus from Marrakech City —
CTM (the main Moroccan intercity bus company) runs regular services from Marrakech bus station to Essaouira. The journey takes approximately 3 hours and costs around 90–110 MAD per person.
The catch: Marrakech bus station (Gare Routière, near Bab Doukkala) is 10 km from the airport. You first need a taxi from the airport to the bus station, then wait for the next departure, then take the 3-hour bus, then find a local taxi from Essaouira bus station to your riad.
Total journey time from airport: typically 4 to 5 hours.
Total cost for two people: 300–400 MAD (airport taxi + 2 bus tickets + local taxi in Essaouira).
For a group of 3 or 4, a direct private transfer is comparable in price and far less complicated.
— Option 3: Grand Taxi from Marrakech City —
Shared grand taxis run between Marrakech and Essaouira from the Bab Doukkala taxi stand. You pay per seat (around 70–90 MAD per person). The taxi leaves when it is full — usually 6 passengers.
The journey itself is fast (drivers push the pace), but departure times are unpredictable. You may wait 30 minutes or 90 minutes for the taxi to fill. The car is often cramped. There are no scheduled stops for comfort.
Again, you need to get from the airport to the Bab Doukkala taxi stand first.
— Option 4: Hire a Car —
Car hire is available at Marrakech Airport from international and local companies. Prices start from around 200 MAD per day. Driving yourself to Essaouira is very manageable — the P2020 road is straightforward, well-signposted and scenic.
The downsides: you need to navigate Essaouira's medina entrance (confusing the first time), parking is limited, and returning the car at the end adds logistics. If you plan to stay in Essaouira and not drive while there, car hire may not be cost-effective.
— The Scenic Route Option —
If you book a private transfer and have a relaxed schedule, ask your driver about the coastal route via Sidi Kaouki. This adds 20 to 30 minutes but takes you along empty Atlantic beaches before arriving in Essaouira. A genuinely beautiful introduction to the region.
